Oshawa is home to the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (opened in 2003), which brings in students from as close as Ajax homes to those from overseas. The main campus of Durham College is also located in the city. The university and college share a campus and some facilities, however the two institutions are independent. The university's courses emphasize technology, manufacturing and engineering themes (given the city's industrial heritage). It is the only university in Canada to offer degree programs in Automotive Engineering and Nuclear Engineering.
