New To The Area

Certain circumstances can conspire to make it necessary for a person to move to a new city without knowing much about it. Perhaps a relative living there has fallen ill. Maybe your boss has unexpectedly transferred you out of town. It's also possible that the lease on your Condos for Rent Toronto is up and you need to move somewhere cheaper. However you ended up in Oshawa, Ontario, a real estate agent can help you become more familiar with the area. Until you set up an appointment, however, you can rely on our overview of the city.

The People

Who will your neighbours be? Will you fit into your new city? These are questions that worry most people who will be coming into a new area. If you're from one of those townhomes Toronto has in the denser neighborhoods, you're probably used to more diversity than you will find in Oshawa. As of 2006, only about 8.1% of Oshawa's 141,500 residents belonged to a visible minority, though the city does have size-able numbers of people with Eastern European ethnicity. The average age for residents is about 35.8 years and the most popular religions are Protestant, Catholic, Muslim, and Hindu.

The Economy

If you're not moving to Oshawa because your existing boss transferred you, finding a job is probably one of your major worries, since private lenders for mortgages generally don't approve the unemployed. The largest industry in Oshawa is auto manufacturing, which you've probably heard is not doing so well at present. Other jobs you might find here include Canadian staples like government office work, hospital work, and teaching positions subject to your qualifications. Another option would be to commute to Toronto.

The Locales

Unlike some of the cobbled together municipalities you'll find in the Greater Toronto Area, Oshawa is a single entity, which means it has evolved enough to have a size-able downtown core. There are denser, more affordable neighborhoods in the southern half of the city where homes are more typical of company housing and share neighborhood space with factories. In the northern half of Oshawa you'll find suburban communities such as those that are the specialty of Brampton real estate agents.

Getting Around

You may be wondering how you're going to get from one place to another if you're flying in from Ottawa. Job searches are complicated in some areas when you don't have a car, but you should be able to manage in Oshawa. The GO Train system connects Oshawa with the other municipalities in the GTA and Durham Transit operates bus routes within the city itself. Oshawa does have a small municipal airport, but flights are much easier and cheaper to get from Toronto's Pearson International.
